How to Vet a Smart Pet Hardware ODM: Firmware, App and Servers

It is easy to vet a plastic part — you check the mold and the material. A smart pet device is harder, because half of it is software you cannot see in a sample photo. A tracker that looks perfect on the bench can still fail in the field if the firmware is shaky, the app is abandoned, or nobody actually owns the servers. Here is the checklist we would use if we were the buyer.

Is the firmware and app really in house?

Ask directly who writes the firmware and who builds the app. Many "factories" buy a reference design and outsource the software, which means every change request goes to a third party and stalls. Tize keeps mechanical, electronics, firmware and app engineering under one roof, so when your market needs a behavior changed — a different alert logic, a localized app, a tweak to battery handling — the people who can change it are in the building. That is the single biggest predictor of whether an ODM relationship stays responsive.

Who owns the servers behind "no subscription"?

For any connected product, and especially a No Monthly Fee tracker, the servers are the hidden dependency. A no-subscription promise to end users only holds if the supplier runs and maintains the back end behind it. Ask how location data flows, who operates the servers, and what the plan is for app updates over the product's life. A device whose app quietly stops working in a year becomes e-waste and a wave of returns, no matter how good the hardware was.

Is the factory real and verifiable?

Finally, separate a trading desk from an actual plant. Tize has manufactured pet smart hardware in Shenzhen since 2011, with a roughly 10,000 m² facility and a team of around 300, exporting to 100+ countries. We support video audits, third-party inspections and scheduled visits, and can provide the business license and factory address on a verification request. If a supplier resists every one of those, treat it as the answer.
